Language for Life
Language for Life is a Language Institute program that gives current UW-Madison students the opportunity to meet with alumni who studied a foreign language at the UW-Madison and are using that language in their professional or personal lives in inspiring ways.

We are pleased to report on the compelling panel discussion with UW alumni on languages and careers in international development. The Language Institute would like to thank the panelists for their hard work in putting together presentations that were interesting and informative to current UW students.

Stephan Boucher (B.A., M.A. and PH.D., UW-Madison) , assistant professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of California, Davis. Professor Boucher teaches courses in micro-economic theory and
development economics. In his research, he focuses on how well markets
for land, labor, and credit perform for the rural poor. Much of his
research is based on quantitative and qualitative surveys of households,
firms, and institutions in Latin America. His current work focuses on
Peru, Mexico and Central America. He received a PhD. in Agricultural
and Applied Economics from UW-Madison in 2000. As an undergraduate, he majored in Spanish, Ibero-American Studies and Economics (with minors in
paella and ceviche) and spent his sophomore year studying in Spain.
He speaks Spanish and Portuguese.

Malcolm Childress (Ph.D., UW-Madison), Sr. Land Administration Specialist, Rural Development, Latin America and
the Caribbean Region, The World Bank. Malcolm Childress leads projects and policy dialogues dealing with land policy
and rural development for the World Bank in South America. His current work
focuses on Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay. He was previously a research scientist
at the Land Tenure Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he worked on
issues related to land policy and international development worldwide. He
received a Ph.D. in Development Studies from the UW-Madison in 1996. He speaks
Spanish, Portuguese and Russian. |

Nick Magnan (B.S., UW-Madison), Ph.D. candidate in Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of California, Davis. Nick is working on his dissertation on sustainable agricultural practices in developing countries. He recently returned from a summer of fieldwork in Morocco. He received his B.S. in Biology from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at UW-Madison in 2002. While an undergraduate at Madison he studied biology in France and did research on forest ecology in the Alps. During his time as a student in Madison, Nick worked as a Study Abroad Peer Advisor. He has also studied in Spain and Brazil and speaks French, Portuguese, and Spanish. |
