Abstract
Language instructors may feel constrained by the pedagogical approach of their program, the syllabus, and most of all, the textbook. It is challenging to find a balance between personal teaching style and the materials that instructors work with. Students seem to respond with greater enthusiasm to activities not from the book, yet creating these activities is time-consuming for instructors and not always successful in practice. This presentation, by a co-author of two intermediate French textbooks, will discuss textbook writing and approaches to personalizing textbook exercises, offering ideas for creative activities that can be adapted for the spaces in lesson plans to energize students. Examples will be from French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, but the ideas of the presentation will apply to the teaching of all languages.
This lecture is free and open to the public. Sponsored by the Language Institute, with funding from the College of Letters and Science Anonymous Fund.
