The Language Institute was launched with a generous donation from the Schoenleber Foundation and with ongoing financial support of the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Letters and Science and Division of International Studies.

Projects in Russian and Swahili are funded by the US Department of Education and the National Endowment for the Humanities, respectively.

World Languages Day 2004 was funded by UW-Madison College of Letters and Science, the Division of International Studies, the Anonymous Fund, Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies Program, the Center for Russia , East Europe and Central Asia, the African Studies Program, the Global Studies Program, the Center for South Asia and the Center for European Studies.

World Cinema Day 2005 is a high school outreach program of the Language Institute in partnership with the UW-Madison Arts Institute and is made possible with the generous support from the Brittingham Fund and the Evjue Foundation.
