Welcome to the UW-Madison Language Institute
Inaugurated on April 29, 2004, the Institute's mission is to promote the study of languages, literatures, and cultures. Following this mission, it provides information about the wealth of educational opportunities offered by UW-Madison to the campus, Wisconsin K-12 schools, business and the community. It is also the home of the interdisciplinary doctoral program in Second Language Acquisition, which provides support to research efforts of the Institute.
The Language Institute is an initiative of the College of Letters and Science, with substantial support from the Division of International Studies. It has also received support from the Schoenleber Foundation. The Institute benefits from the insights and efforts of many colleagues, especially those on its advisory committee.
In 2007-08, the Language Institute is hosting events, workshops and symposia, and working with departments and area studies programs to facilitate instruction in the 60 plus languages taught at the UW-Madison. Featured series include Assessing Language Learning,Language for Life; for high school students and teachers, World Languages Day and Bringing the World Home, as well as World Cinema Day.
We are also working steadily on three major grants and a gift:
