Welcome to the UW-Madison Language Institute

Professor Sally Sieloff MagnanInaugurated on April 29, 2004, the Institute's mission is to promote the study of languages, literatures, and cultures.  Following this mission, it provides information about the wealth of educational opportunities offered by UW-Madison to the campus, Wisconsin K-12 schools, business and the community. It is also the home of the interdisciplinary doctoral program in Second Language Acquisition, which provides support to research efforts of the Institute.

The Language Institute is an initiative of the College of Letters and Science, with substantial support from the Division of International Studies.  It has also received support from the Schoenleber Foundation.  The Institute benefits from the insights and efforts of many colleagues, especially those on its advisory committee.

In 2007-08, the Language Institute is hosting events, workshops and symposia, and working with departments and area studies programs to facilitate instruction in the 60 plus languages taught at the UW-Madison. Featured series include Assessing Language Learning,Language for Life; for high school students and teachers, World Languages Day and Bringing the World Home, as well as World Cinema Day.

We are also working steadily on three major grants and a gift:

  • Online Language Initiative, to develop online courses in business Chinese and beginning Urdu with funding from the Office of Education Outreach;

  • Giannini Chinese Online Program, to develop online Chinese courses for high school students;

  • CAILS: Central Asian Interactive Listening Series, to develop advanced listening materials for Kazak and Uzbek with funding from the U.S. Department of Education;

  • With the National Council of Less Commonly Taught Languages, National Online Less Commonly Taught Languages Teacher Training Initiative, to develop online modules for teacher professional development in less commonly taught languages (funding from the U.S. Department of Education).

Working on these grants and on initiatives of the Language Institute, our team includes:

Dianna Murphy, Associate Director
Wendy Johnson, Outreach Coordinator and CAILS Project Coordinator
Malliga Somasundaram, Financial Specialist
Suyeon Kim, Project Assistant
Tom Boman, Undergraduate Assistant
